As much as we love Toronto, sometimes you need to escape the city for a nice weekend away. There are plenty of options for road trips, but if you don’t have access to a car or just want an easy way to get out of the city then taking the train is an excellent and classic way to go.
Via Rail is a short walk away from us and allows us access to some great destinations across Canada and some that are definitely ideal weekend trips. With comfy seats, large windows, wifi, and plenty of snacks, it’s a nice travel option nearby.
Take advantage of those long weekends coming up this summer and book a trip to one of these spots!
Montreal is best done on a long weekend, but it’s only around 5 hours away by train which still gives you plenty of time to check out the city. Wander around Old Montreal and enjoy the historical architecture or take in one of the many festivals going on in the city. There’s also plenty of bars, museums, and the gorgeous Mont Royal to hike up.
The capital may not be the first place you think of for a weekend getaway, but there’s more to it than just Parliament Buildings! There are plenty of museums worth checking out, festivals, restaurants, and enjoy a nice summer walk along the canal. If you’re a music lover, you may want to head there in time for Bluesfest! Best of all, you can be in Ottawa in just over 4 hours.
If you’re a fan of theatre then it goes without saying that you’d love a long weekend in Stratford, host of the Stratford Festival. This charming historic town is only 2 hours away from Toronto and features boutiques to explore for shopping plus world-class restaurants, cafes, and ice cream parlours. Interested in a little culture? They also have an annual Stratford Summer Music Festival where there’s free concerts throughout the city with everything from jazz to classical music to check out!
Ah Niagara Falls, it’s so close but just far enough away to constitute a weekend away. It’s only a 2 hour trip by train and you can spend the weekend shopping, at the casino, and enjoying that gorgeous view of the falls. Get up close and personal with the falls on the Maid of the Mist or explore one of the many attractions nearby.
