The holiday season is made up of many annual traditions. For some it’s skating at Nathan Phillips Square, for others it’s enjoying a hot chocolate at the Toronto Christmas Market, and for many, it’s taking in a show of the Nutcracker. Since 2008 the Toronto International Ballet Theatre has been putting on a whimsical production of the classic tale for theatre-goers. This year’s one night performance will be taking place at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, and it will be nothing short of mystical.
Haven’t heard the Nutcracker tale before? We’ll give you a brief synopsis, with out any spoilers. It’s Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum house, and the 3 children are beside themselves with joy and excitement, with the music, Christmas presents, and festive food at hand. But once the local magician, Drosselmeyer arrives at the doorstep a truly fantastical story is unleashed. One where mice and gingerbread men are at war, and the children (not to mention the audience) are transported to the Land of Sweets, with sugar plum fairies and of course, a wooden Nutcracker come to life!
